Hot chocolate is perfect for those ice-cold January nights when you cannot seem to get warm.  It can be made plain and simple, married with other flavors like peppermint or dressed up with toppings like marshmallows or whipped cream.  Whether you call it hot chocolate or cocoa, it's a quick and easy dessert that can be enjoyed during the long chilly winter months.

There are plenty of ready-made mixes for hot chocolate out there, including ones made for Keurig and other coffee machines.  None of these, however, are nearly as good as making your own – and it only takes a couple more minutes to throw a few ingredients together for the best hot chocolate you have ever tasted.

Hot Chocolate

Ingredients

  • 1 C milk
  • 1/2 C dark chocolate wafers
  • 1/2 t ground cinnamon
  • 1 T caramel
  • whipped cream
  • chocolate syrup

Equipment

  • large coffee mug (10+ oz)
  • microwave safe measuring cup OR small saucepan
  • measuring spoons
  • spoon

In the mug, add the cinnamon, caramel and chocolate wafers.  Heat the milk in the microwave or on the stovetop until it is just barely at a boil.  Pour the hot milk into the mug and stir until all the chocolate dissolves (about 1 minute).
